Finding Game Content

Welcome back! Let's talk about finding game content for the main character. There is a lot of content available online; in particular, the Unreal Marketplace and Unity Asset Store provide a vast amount of free and paid content that you can use for your game.

For this project, I decided to use Adobe's Mixamo because it provides a wide range of free character models and animations. The above image is a screen capture of a Mixamo model named Timmy and I plan to use it as the main character for this game. There are a lot of character models available on Mixamo, but Timmy seemed like it would be fun to get moving around in a game world, so I chose it.

Another reason I'm a big fan of Mixamo is that it supports minor modifications to animations without needing to import them into a content creation tool. For example, here are a few animation properties that I found useful:

  • Character Arm Space - How far the character's arms are from their body
  • Mirror - Whether to mirror the animation across the body
  • In Place - Whether root motion is included (unfortunately, not all root motion animations have this option available)

For animations, I plan to use Mixamo's Action Adventure Pack and Locomotion Pack to drive Timmy's movement capabilities (with a few standalone animations thrown in where need).

You can find Timmy as well as the mentioned animation packs on Mixamo using the search feature. Thanks for reading and I look forward to sharing more information about this project soon.
